Waterloo Wind Farm is a wholly-owned project of Roaring 40s Renewable Energy Pty Ltd.
Location
The proposed Waterloo Wind Farm is located near the Clare Valley in South Australia, about 30 km south-east of the township of Clare and 100 km north of the state capital Adelaide. The site is a rocky ridge on privately-owned property surrounded by gently sloping farm land, with easy main road access and nearby supporting infrastructure.
Project scope
The Waterloo Wind Farm comprises thirty-seven wind turbines, with a total maximum generating capacity of 111 MW.
Data gathered suggests that the area’s wind resource is world-class. Two monitoring towers were erected to investigate the wind potential of the site in more detail. Anemometers installed on the towers at heights of 30, 50 and 70 metres are collecting wind measurements and their data will be used to select the best locations for wind turbines.
Environmental focus
Roaring 40s is committed to the proactive development of a low environmental impact wind farm. At every project, Roaring 40s intent is to not only generate clean, renewable energy, but also to establish construction and operational measures that result in a net positive effect on the environment.
This is evidenced by the conditions that have been proposed and agreed as part of the project's development approval, which include:
- Extensive heritage, flora and fauna surveys prior to construction to determine conservation actions
- Background noise and TV/radio reception measurements in order to benchmark levels during operation
- Brokering heritage agreements to covenant high-value native vegetation in perpetuity in an order of magnitude greater than that affected by the construction
Community benefits
Approximately 50 to 100 short to medium term jobs will be created by the year-long construction phase, with positive economic flow-on benefits to the local economy estimated at $18 million.
